Irish Coffee
Did you know Irish Coffee is a cocktail? This was news to me. I used to fill my regular mug with coffee, dump whiskey in it, and call it a day. No surprise, it didn’t taste that good and I rarely finished a cup.
My Irish Coffee world was changed when I had a cup at The Dead Rabbit in New York City. Whoa. That is what Irish Coffee is supposed to taste like!?! I went on an adventure to figure out how to make this at home.
After a few Google searches and a couple of experiments, I finally got it right and now it is a favorite cocktail at our house in the fall and winter.
What I learned
- Make the whipped cream from scratch. You will not regret it.
- Think of this as a cocktail and not a full cup of coffee. The ratios here are really important and you actually don’t need that much coffee
- Simple syrup > sugar
- Get yourself this mug if you love to sip this by a fire or this mug for an elevated look that allows you to see the layers of this special cocktail
The Dead Rabbit Irish Coffee Dupe
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
1 oz Irish Whiskey (I use Jameson)
3 oz Coffee
Simple Syrup
This is easy! 1:1 ratio of water and sugar, simmer over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved and then let sit until it gets to room temperature. Refrigerate for up to one month.
Homemade Whipped Cream
1 pint of heavy whipping cream
2-3 TBSP confectioner sugar
1 TSP Vanilla Extract
Mixed ingredients into a large bowl and mix with a hand mixer on low speed until cream starts to thicken. Then, increase to high speed for about 3 minutes until cream forms stiff peaks. Don’t over mix or it will turn to butter! You can add more confectioner sugar and stir with a spatula if you want a sweeter whipped cream.
